ABU Alumni gets new Excos

The Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Alumni Association elected new executive committee members during its 12th Annual General Assembly (AGA) held at the University’s Main Campus, Samaru, Zaria, between August 18 and 19, 2017.

A report issued said during an election AGA where delegates actively participated in the processes that led to the emergence of a new executive committee for the Association, Pharm Ahmed Tijjani Mora, mni, of Kaduna State branch, was returned unopposed as the National President. Also returned unopposed were the Deputy National President, Prof. Olufunmilayo Braide, Arc. Nurudeen Lanre Quadri as Vice President (North Central) and Mr. Wale Adeola Akintade as Vice President (South West).

Other former and new EXCO members who made the new list are Alh. Muhammad Aliyu Anka, Vice President (North West), Pharm. Lawan Ali Gajerima, Vice President (North East), Mrs. Tina Nwanyanwu Igbasi, Vice President (South East), Dr. David Edughom Lambert, Vice President (South South), Arc. Lawal Muhammad Yusuf, fnia, Secretary General, Prof. Maryam Aminu-Mukhtar, Asst. Secretary General, Mr. Sam Ojie Agbi, JP, Treasurer, Dr. Haruna Muhammad Jumare, Financial Secretary, Mall. Mahmud Mohammed Danjuma, FNES, P. R. O, Bldr. Suleiman Sa’idu Darazo, Welfare Officer, Barr. Lateef Saka Abdulsalam, Legal Adviser, Mr. Hosea Yashim Boman, FCA, Internal Auditor, and Sir, Andy Osa Ehanire, Arc. Ibrahim Sani Khalil, fnia, Barr. Mohammed A. Benesheikh, and Princess (Mrs.) Henrietta I. Ogan, Ex-Officio Members.

They were all accordingly sworn in by the Chief Returning Officer, Justice Idi Appollos, alongside other members of the electoral commission: Adamu Kwantagora, Rivers State Branch Chairman of the Association and Mrs. Madina Azaki of Abuja Branch, who presided over the elections. The AGA reports indicated major achievements by the Association in attracting the partnership of members to build their alma mater through various projects, strong liaison with the University Management on major programs and projects, including the ongoing Phase II Site Postgraduate Students Hostels, the Overhead Pedestrian Bridge at the North Gate in Samaru Campus, the Omatek Computer Loan Scheme and the foreseen Intra-Campus Shuttle Bus Services.

The reports also highlighted scholarship and research grants, awards to distinguished alumni and the general repositioning of the Association to meet the challenges of attaining its rightful place, being one of the biggest and best universities on the continent of Africa.

In the same light, Hajiya Amina Mohammed, the Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, while giving the AGA Public Lecture on “The role of Alumni Associations in the Advancement of University Education,” charged members of the alumni association to commit actively to giving back to their alma mater. She reiterated the fact that philanthropy is germane in institutional development.

Responding, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Ibrahim Garba, having commended the efforts so far made by the association, added his voice to the clarion call for alumni support for the advancement of research and learning in the university. He shared the success stories of the university in national competitions, and a legacy project which offers final year students the platform to practise philanthropy and selfless service to humanity. The feats attained, ha said, would not have been possible without the strong backing of the association.

Present at the AGA Public Lecture were the Chairman of Council, AVM Moukhtar Mohammed, the National President of ABU Alumni Association, Pharm Ahmed Tijjani Mora, mni, as well as his Exco members, Alhaji Shehu Idris, CFR, the Emir of Zazzau, ably represented by Alh. Abbas Fatika (Sarkin Fadan Zazzau), the Chancellor of the University, the Obi of Onitsha, HRM, Igwe (Dr) Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe, CFR, mni and other distinguished guests. The event also featured the public presentation and launching of the book “Towards Achieving our Dream for ABU” (2nd Ed.)
