As we forge ahead to conquer the pandemic that has rendered society obsolete, we want to urge every alumni member of the University and the entire community to please ensure that we all adhere strictly to the laid down preventive measures stipulated by professionals and the government. Despite the lock down, the University is still hunkered on ensuring service to society while adhering to social distancing and ensuring safety of everyone. These are some of the activities over the last month.

DISINFECTING THE CAMPUS

Following the deliberate action by the new management of the University to help Nigeria reduce and halt the spread of the Novel Corona Virus, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Kabir Bala, wishes to inform the University Community of the decontamination and disinfection of the Samaru and Kongo Campuses of the University. The decontamination exercise followed the standards of materials and relevant contents of the NCDC and the WHO to ensure maximum impact. This is to ensure that the University is safe for visits and also the staff who have to come to work in these times.

AHMADU BELLO UNIVERSITY TO COMMENCE ANTI-CORRUPTION STUDIES

One of the mantra of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, is to issue certificates in both Learning and Character; and it is on this note that the university and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to start five different programmes in anti-corruption studies to strengthen anti-corruption crusade in Nigeria. The collaboration between the participating institutions would, upon its effective date, introduce programmes in anti-corruption studies.

RAW MATERIALS RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL BACKS ABU ON PPE KITS

You would recall that last month, we had mentioned the production of the PPE and face masks done by the Equipment Maintenance and Development Centre. The equipment, which had already scaled tests by the Standards Organization of Nigerian (SON), and currently being tested by NAFDAC. On a visit by a team led by the Vice Chancellor, RMRDC gave a grant of 20 million Naira to support the mass production of PPE by the University.

In furtherance to this, it will interest you to know that the council is also collaborating with the University on textile engineering, and will be furthering these collaborations into the pharmaceutical sector among others.

THE ABU-CSU 3+2 JOINT DEGREE PROGRAMME UPDATE

FIRST BATCH OF STUDENTS COMPLETE STUDIES

The first batch of 300L ABU engineering students who were sent to China under the “3+2 program” have successfully completed their studies with excellent results. The 45 ABU students and 13 academic staff all from the Faculty of Engineering were flown to China for the joint Bachelor’s degree programme in engineering at Central South University (CSU), Changsha China in September 2018. You would recall that of the 45 ABU Engineering students, 30 were sponsored by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and the other 15 by CSU. They specialized in civil engineering, traffic, and transportation engineering as well as railway equipment and control engineering. Thirty (30) of the students are from the Department of Civil Engineering while fifteen (15) are from mechanical engineering. The 30 from civil are split into two, 15 continued with civil while the other 15 studied traffic and transportation engineering. The 15 from mechanical engineering studied traffic and transportation engineering.

TWENTY STUDENTS OFFERED MASTERS SCHOLARSHIPS

It’s worthy to mention that CSU has awarded 20 students master’s degree scholarship. The students were selected based on academic ranking and preference. Six students from Civil Engineering, seven students from Traffic and Transportation Engineering, seven students from Transportation, Equipment and Control Engineering (Mechanical Engineering ABU).

THIRD BATCH OF THE JOINT DEGREE SHORTLISTED

It is also with great pleasure that we will like to also announce that third batch of students for the joint degree programme have been selected by the CSU Changsha China and are getting ready to leave for China to commence their studies as soon as possible.
