On the 1st of May 2020, Professor Kabir Bala has formally taken over as the new Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University. The Vice Chancellor promised to ensure high levels of discipline, accountability and transparency in the service delivery of day to day operations of the University.

The students bulge (both current and alumni) remain the primary focus of the University’s management; and in recognition of this, the Vice Chancellor has set out to ensure that new policies and structures are put in place to ensure good service delivery across levels of operations. One of which is the Perception Research which would be available soon to the general public. Professor Bala recognized that in order for a system to function optimally the modus operandi of that structure has to be community driven and be allowed to thrive in the merits of those who are considered beneficiaries.

In addition, a 200 Level student of Mechanical Engineering, Dalhatu designed a manual ventilator that can serve as a respiratory support for COVID-19 Patients. Dalhatu is a mentee of the Innovation Huv under the Directorate of University Advancement. The manual ventilator comprises of a motor, a disk that converts circular motion into linear motion, shaft, carbon dioxide intake and outlet, oxygen outlet, and a voltmeter. Other components of the machine include control button, speed increasing point, battery, charging point, and oxygen mask.

4-in-1 Hand Sanitizing Machine

The Centre has equally developed an automated 4-in-1 hand sanitizing machine, code named ABUSANIT-20. The sanitizing machine comprises an exceptional electric circuit which designed for the control unit fitted with a n LCD display to regulate the dispensing pattern of the liquid soap, water, drying air from the blower section and finally chemical sanitizer to comb at viral and bacterial contamination. The sanitizing machine also consist of antibacterial soap container, biochemical sanitizer vessel and water tank all designed with DC pumps and controlled from the main single-board micro-controllers Arduino censor board by means of proportional-integral-derivative controller via a control loop device engaging response.


Ahmadu Bello University has established a COVID-19 testing center in conjunction with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to tackle the pandemic in the country. According to the World Health Organization, one of the most effective ways to fighting the COVID-19 is to ensure adequate testing centres for the virus in the mass population so that effective quarantine measures can be taken to separate those infected from those that are not. The Centre, which was certified fit to analyze samples of suspected patients of Corona Virus by the National Centre for Diseases Control (NCDC) in Zaria on
Saturday 25th of April, 2020, is domiciled at the African Centre of Excellence for Neglected Tropical Diseases and Forensic Bio-Technology (ACENTDFB), Ahmadu Bello University. Th e center has an average test conduction of 100 per day depending on the sample submissions but it is however able to carry out about 200 tests per day with the results available within 24 hours.


Ahmadu Bello University Equipment Maintenance and Development Centre (EMDC) has designed an automated ICU ventilator code name ABU-Vent-20. The ventilator is driven by a BLDC motor and is power-driven by either AC or DC source. Face Mask and Hazmat Suit

The Department of Polymer and Textile Engineering of Ahmadu Bello University has engaged in mass production of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Due to the massive request for face Masks, surgical gloves, hazmat suits
and face shields among other essentials required not just by the front liners of the health sector but also the citizens of the country to be able to curb the spread of the virus. After subjecting the commercially available masks to Organization of Nigeria (SON) laboratories, the team discovered a material with better particles and organism filtration efficiency than most of the commercially available face masks. The various isolation gowns/coveralls presently available in the market have varying degrees of resistance to blood and other body fluids, depending on the type of fabric, its impermeability, wear and tear. Owing to this reality, these suits are produced using special airtight and chemical-resistant fabrics understanding that different fabrics are used for different hazardous situations. They are made to be flexible, wearable, and mobile so that the wearer can move around and accomplish his/her tasks with ease some tests at the Standards.
